Here are some do's and don'ts to keep in mind when formatting your documents.

DO:

  • An engaging introduction with a clear main idea.
  • A well-organized body made up of supporting paragraphs.
  • Well-organized paragraphs with clear main ideas.
  • A conclusion.
  • 12 pt. Times New Roman or Arial.
  • Single-spaced paragraphs.
  • Double spacing between paragraphs (in the text itself - some word processors display double spaces that aren't actually there).

DON'T:

  • Don't include notes to the customer or the editor. Remember, your article will not necessarily be purchased by the requesting customer and shouldn't include information relevant only to him or her.
  • Don't include sig lines, bios, promotional language, or anything but your byline. Include your byline if you require attribution for usage and exclusive rights purchases.
  • Don't include information such as price, date, or category. These can be changed in the submission form, but they cannot be changed in the file once the article is accepted.
  • Don't include images or photos. Customers come here for your written work and will illustrate the articles they purchase in a manner that fits the style of their project.
